Round 3 of the 7th Sinquefield Cup 2019 in Saint Louis was a draw between Carlsen and Caruana. The Sinquefield Cup, founded in 2013, had established itself by 2019 as one of the strongest annual classical tournaments on the world calendar. The 2019 edition was a 10-player round-robin.
Carlsen as White played a Reti-style opening, building a small structural edge that the middlegame did not concretise. Caruana defended accurately. The draw was accepted in 35 moves with material balance and no clear winning chances.
The 2019 Sinquefield Cup ended in a remarkable tie among Carlsen, Ding Liren, and Aronian — three players on 5.5/9. The tiebreaks went to Ding Liren, who became the first Chinese player to win the Sinquefield Cup. Caruana finished sixth.
The Sinquefield Cup has been the marquee event of the Grand Chess Tour calendar throughout its history. Its winners include Caruana (2014), Topalov (2015), Carlsen (2018, 2021, 2023), Ding (2019), Aronian (2017), Nakamura (2022). The event has consistently produced some of the most analyzed games of each year, including Caruana’s 8.5/10 in 2014 — the highest performance rating in chess history.
