Round 3.3 of the June 2020 Clutch Championship was won by Carlsen as White. The opening was a Closed Catalan with Carlsen choosing a quiet positional line. By move 25 Carlsen had built the kind of small structural edge his style converted reliably; by move 40 the endgame was lost for Black. The conversion completed in 55 moves.
The Clutch Championship’s June 2020 edition featured day-matches between specific pairings, with the Carlsen-Caruana match (round 3, rounds 3.1 through 3.12) being the headline pairing. The format allowed for back-and-forth between specific pairs of players — a contrast to traditional Swiss or round-robin formats where each encounter is one-off.
Carlsen-Caruana had played a 12-game classical World Championship match in London 2018 that ended 6-6 in classical, with Carlsen winning the rapid tiebreak 3-0. Their online clashes in 2019-2020 continued the rivalry but in shorter time controls where Carlsen’s intuitive advantage was more pronounced. The cumulative score across all formats in this period heavily favoured Carlsen.
The Catalan Opening — Carlsen’s most-used 1.d4 system in the 2018- 2020 period — became a recurring theme in Carlsen-Caruana online matches. Caruana eventually adopted the Catalan as White himself when he played Carlsen; the opening’s role as a strategic battleground between elite players has continued.
