The Carlsen vs Ding Liren tiebreak game at the 7th Sinquefield Cup 2019 (Round 4 TB) was won by Ding Liren as Black. The 2019 Sinquefield Cup had ended in a three-way tie among Carlsen, Ding Liren, and Aronian, requiring tiebreak playoffs. Ding Liren won the playoff ultimately and took the Sinquefield Cup title.
The tiebreak game was a sharp Najdorf Sicilian with Ding Liren defending Black. Carlsen as White tried to break through with a kingside attack; Ding Liren’s defensive technique held and eventually counterattacked. The win in roughly 50 moves clinched the playoff victory for Ding Liren.
Ding Liren’s 2019 Sinquefield Cup victory was the first major classical tournament won by a Chinese player at the elite level. It established him as more than a strong national champion — he was now a credible challenger for the World Championship. The result fed directly into his 2020 Candidates Tournament campaign (where he finished second), his 2022 Candidates (also second behind Nepomniachtchi), and ultimately his 2023 World Championship win in Astana when Carlsen declined to defend.
The 2019 Sinquefield Cup also marked one of the rare classical playoff defeats Carlsen suffered in his peak years. He had won most playoff matches during the 2013-2019 period; Ding Liren’s tiebreak victory was a sign that the gap between the world’s top player and his closest rivals was beginning to close.
