Round 3 of the 2001 Botvinnik Memorial 30’ rapid match (December 7, 30+0 time control) was a draw between Kramnik and Kasparov. The 30’ rapid section featured longer time controls than blitz, allowing for more strategic play but still compressed compared to classical.

The draw was a Catalan Opening, a Kramnik specialty during this period. Kasparov’s Black response was solid; the middlegame produced no concrete chances for either side; the endgame was balanced. The draw was accepted in roughly 40 moves.

The 30’ rapid section of the Botvinnik Memorial was the most strategically rich of the four match formats. Time was sufficient for both players to find precise moves, but not so generous that the games extended into the typical 5-hour classical length. The result was a series of high-quality 1-2 hour games.

The Catalan Opening’s role as Kramnik’s primary 1.d4 weapon through the 2000-2008 period made it a recurring feature of his games against Kasparov. The opening’s quiet positional character suited Kramnik’s style and gave him small persistent advantages that classical-format games could convert. In the faster Botvinnik Memorial 30’ games, similar conversions were less common but the strategic advantages remained.
