KNSB Royal Dutch Chess Federation
The national governing body of chess in the Netherlands — administers the Dutch Championship, the Meesterklasse league, and the country's flagship international event (Tata Steel Chess at Wijk aan Zee).
The Koninklijke Nederlandse Schaakbond — KNSB — is one of the oldest national chess federations in the world, founded in 1873 (four years before Germany’s DSB). The federation administers the Dutch Championship, the Meesterklasse (the top tier of the country’s club league), and the qualification cycle for Dutch players. The KNSB also coordinates with the Tata Steel Chess Tournament Foundation that runs the annual Wijk aan Zee international event each January — the world’s most prestigious round-robin super-tournament.
The Tradition
Dutch chess has produced one world champion (Max Euwe, 1935–37) and has consistently fielded a top-twenty national team since the founding of the Olympiad. The current generation is led by Anish Giri (long-standing top-ten player), Jorden van Foreest (2021 Tata Steel Masters winner), and Max Warmerdam. The Dutch chess infrastructure is among the most accessible in Europe, with strong club scenes in Amsterdam, Utrecht, Rotterdam, and Eindhoven.
