Hoogovens, 28 January 1999

Round 10 of the 1999 Hoogovens Tournament was a draw between Kasparov and Anand. The classical-time-control game lasted 45 moves in a positional struggle that produced no clear winning chances for either side. Both players were leading the tournament at this stage; the draw maintained their relative positions.

The opening was a Closed Spanish (Ruy Lopez), a classical theoretical battleground at the elite level of the period. Kasparov as White played the Closed Spanish in his typical style — slow positional manoeuvring, building small advantages, looking for the right moment to apply pressure. Anand’s defence was accurate; no concrete opportunities arose.

The 1999 Hoogovens was won by Kasparov with 9.5/13. Anand finished second on 8.5. The result was characteristic of Kasparov’s 1999 form: exceptional. He scored a 2900-level performance rating at multiple events during the year, setting the all-time peak rating record at 2851 in July 1999.

The Hoogovens event has been a Carlsen and Magnus-watching venue since the late 2000s, with Carlsen winning the tournament eight times — equalling Mikhail Tal’s record. The 1999 event was part of the older tradition that produced the contemporary Tata Steel format, with the event still played each January at the same seaside town.
