The 3rd Quantbox Chennai Grand Masters runs from 15 to 23 July at the Hyatt Regency in Chennai. Ten players in a classical round-robin, sponsored by quantitative-trading firm Quantbox in partnership with the WestBridge-Anand Chess Academy. The event is India’s strongest classical round-robin and, since 2024, has served as a primary domestic platform for the country’s rising grandmasters to play category-19 games against international competition.
Origin and purpose
The Chennai Grand Masters was founded in 2024, two years after India hosted the Chess Olympiad. The aim was to give Indian players — especially the under-25 generation that won the 2022 and 2024 Olympiads — a home tournament at world-elite category. The 2024 and 2025 editions both featured Gukesh, Pragg, and Arjun in the headline field; in 2026 Gukesh is absent due to championship-defense scheduling, but Arjun and Pragg return alongside Vidit Gujrathi.
The 2026 field
Ten players, mix of three Indian top-board grandmasters and seven international invitees. The international contingent for 2026 includes Wei Yi, Aronian, and two surprise wildcards from the 2025 Grand Swiss top-twenty. Time control is 90+30, no rapid or blitz tiebreaks, no Armageddon. Prize fund $100,000, with the winner taking $30,000 and bonus $5,000 for any sweep over a top-half opponent. Live coverage in English and Tamil on the tournament’s YouTube channel.
