The Carlsen-Caruana game at the 2019 FIDE Chess.com Grand Swiss in Round 9 was a draw between the two highest-rated players at the event. The inaugural Grand Swiss was held on the Isle of Man in October-November 2019 with a 154-player field. Winner qualified for the 2020 Candidates Tournament.
The game was solid through 40 moves. Both players had qualified positions for the late rounds and neither needed to take risks against the other. The opening was a quiet Italian Game, a structure Carlsen had played multiple times throughout 2019. The middlegame featured slow manoeuvring; the endgame was a balanced minor-piece position.
Wang Hao won the Grand Swiss with 8/11. Caruana finished co-second with Levon Aronian on 8/11 (Hao won on tiebreaks). Carlsen — playing his first Grand Swiss — finished fifth with 7.5/11, his lowest finish in a major event that year. The Grand Swiss format was meant to add a new qualification path to the World Championship cycle and succeeded in its inaugural year.
The Grand Swiss has continued as a biennial event. By 2023 it had become an established qualification route, with previous winners including Wang Hao (2019) and Vidit Gujrathi (2023). Caruana’s 2019 finish contributed to his being seeded as one of the top candidates when he eventually qualified for the 2020 Candidates Tournament.
