The European Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships close out the European Chess Union’s calendar each December, awarding continental rapid and blitz titles in open and women’s sections. The 2026 edition is the twenty-seventh running and is hosted in Lisbon at the Portuguese Congress Centre from 27 through 30 December.
Format
Two events run back-to-back: Rapid (13-round Swiss at 15 minutes plus 10 seconds per move) over two days, then Blitz (13-round Swiss at 3 minutes plus 2-second increment) over one day. Separate titles are awarded for open and women’s sections in each format. Eligibility is open to any FIDE-rated player whose federation is a member of the European Chess Union; bye policy and tie-break rules follow standard ECU regulations.
The 2026 Host
The Lisbon Congress Centre is Portugal’s first time hosting the event. The expected field of 800+ across both events makes the European Rapid and Blitz the largest individual chess tournament hosted in Portugal in any year — a stretch for the federation’s event-management capacity but a deliberate showcase choice for its 2026 cycle.
History and Tradition
The European Chess Union has run the rapid-and-blitz format annually since the late 1990s, with hosts rotating across the continent. Recent hosts include Sarajevo (2025), Zagreb (2024), Katowice (2023), and Warsaw (2022). The Lisbon edition follows the recent ECU pattern of using major continental events to distribute hosting opportunities across smaller federations whose chess scenes benefit from international visibility.
Place in the December Calendar
The December scheduling is deliberately positioned for travelling pros on the way to the FIDE World Rapid & Blitz Championships the same week. Many elite players treat the European event as a tune-up for the World event a few days later; the practical effect is a strong top of the field even though the ECU prize fund is below FIDE world-championship levels. Substantial participation comes from across the European federations plus invitees from neighbouring African and Asian federations, as is traditional for this ECU event.
